Research focus

The area supports a wide program of research projects reflecting the diversity of its staff and students.

Our staff's current active research projects include:
creative work in novel, poetry, critical essay and film direction, creative non-fiction projects on car culture and also on terrorism and fear in Australia as well as research into Vietnamese and South East Asian Writing, into the cultures of the Indian Ocean and Madagascar, in British and European literary studies, into colonial and post-colonial histories of discovery, into cultural philosophy, into alternative media practices in German TV and performance art, into hip hop and popular music, into the screen history of the Australian political thriller and into film studies associated with Hollywood, South East Asian and Indigenous cinema, into modalities of mixed media and multimedia, into experimental approaches to history writing, into the cultural practice of literary reading and into pedagogy and creativity.

Since the program's inception it has been a venue for many of Australia's leading writers and cultural studies scholars and researchers.

Staff supervise doctoral and masters work in the creative arts (fiction and non-fiction projects, poetry, screenwriting, critical essay and innovative creative practice in relation to multimedia.) Other research supervision at a doctoral level includes hip hop, popular cultural studies and popular musics, film adaptation, ficto-critical and experimental writing, as well as research into contemporary cultural and critical theory.
