STUDENT experimental fiction normally figures prominently in any list of things life is too short for, but in this new anthology by UTS writing students, even the more left-field entries work. It's a markedly postmodern, eclectic mix, with writers splicing in excerpts from plays and political speeches, amusing faux-academic footnotes and playing with structure. More traditional pieces are strong too, particularly Storm In A Coffee Mug, where a woman retreats to a beach cabin, and Tiffany Hambley's moving account of her father's death. Joel Scott's tight, sensuous poems and Trish FitzSimon's sombre Peats Ridge essay also stand out.
