Introduction:

This narrative short film is an attempt to dis-illusionise the obsessive love of having exotic birds as pets. 'Flying Free' is a dream that every caged bird whether bred in captivity or captured, desires for. And 'Ara' symbolizes the several caged birds which end up as "companions" every year and spend all their lives in an enclosure with clipped wings in order to fulfil our desires.

It's a paradox that beauty comes with a price, of Life Imprisonment.

Synopsis:

"An ironic love story between the humans and a captive bird".

'ARA', is a multi-coloured macaw who dreams of life outside among his own kind. But his bond with Jack & Tara has deprived him of his desire to be free forever.

Technique:

The radiant quality of the images was attained by using oil paints on glass with back lighting, a traditional technique of animation. It involved a cycle of destroying and creating artworks directly under the 35mm Rostrum film camera.
