Getting work experience in the media - internships

'I believe what the Sydney Morning Herald, or any publication for that matter, is looking for in their writers is speed and flair. This sounds impossible at first but you find yourself ‘in the zone’. That is, if you're actively writing, your brain starts to adapt and you find it is possible to be creative under pressure'.

Sophie Gyles, UTS journalism student, commenting on her internship with the Sydney Morning Herald, Summer 2006

Breaking into a career in journalism can be difficult and without some work experience or a portfolio of work, even more so. Studying journalism at UTS will give you access to work experience and internships with media organizations because of our strong links with industry.

In 2006, UTS journalism students have completed internships at The Australian newspaper, news.com, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Sun Herald, many suburban newspapers, SBS radio, the ABC and commercial radio and TV stations. If you wish to offer an internship to Journalism students contact the Journalism Program Director Wendy Bacon.

Journalism staff have built a database which keeps an ongoing record of students' interests and internship needs. Every week, every journalism students receive emails about job and internship opportunites through UTS On Line. Students also learn from each others' experiences through short reports which are published on our UTS Journalism students discussion board.

You can also build up your portfolio by getting your work published in an university publication. Have a look at the Journalism student publications to see what is available.
