Student work - LEAP

Translating theory into practice and applying it to the real world is fundamental to studying communication at UTS. An example of this is a project that was set for subject 57008 Virtual Information Collections, Resources and Services.

What better way to understand virtual information systems and principles of collection building then having a group of students set the task of developing a prototype of a digital library?

In this case, the students built their library around the theme of Australian print-making. A digital library by the way is an online library, where one can search the collection and look at/read/listen to items online. Working as a project team, the four students had to scope, design and document the proposal, identify tasks and roles and research, design and develop a digital library.

The students were Natalya Godbold, Sophie McDonald, Jeanette Williams and Liam Warner. The project was completed as part of their Graduate Diploma of Information Management.

A digital library is an online library, you can search the collection and look at items online. You go to a web site which tells you about the collection, gives you access to a catalogue which you can search or flick through, and when you see something interesting, you can look at it / read it / listen to it or inspect it in some appropriate way. Sometimes digital libraries will have special exhibitions or galleries as well as the main collection, just like your local city library may have a special display from time to time.
