Centre for New Writing

Library of Celsus

The UTS Centre for New Writing has been established to promote and support research into new forms of writing and provide an external identity for research students. The Centre will create new synergies with government, industry and community bodies in writing, editing and publishing. It will develop external relationships with overseas writers and institutions.

In particular, the Centre aims to:

  • Develop and promote research in the areas of new writing and Australia's literary culture and build a culture that draws researchers, writers and research degree students to the Centre.
  • Act as an incubator of ideas for creative writing practices and research and raise the University's public profile in these fields.
  • Disseminate knowledge about writing to the wider community through seminars, publications, short courses and advisory services.
  • Strengthen the links between corporations, government and community organizations nationally and internationally in the specific areas of creative writing, editing and publishing.

The Centre will also foster new writing from different cultures including translations. It will also promote international staff and student exchanges and foster external relationships.

About the picture: The Library of Celsus in Ephesus, Turkey, was one of the great centres of knowledge in the ancient world. Completed in 135 AD, this Roman library held 12,000 scrolls in niches around its walls. A 1 meter gap between the inner and outer walls protected the valuable texts from humidity. The statues on the façade represent the virtues: Arete (Goodness) Ennoia (Thought) Episteme (Knowledge) and Sophia (Wisdom).
