Computer facilities

Computers facilities are available in the Journalism Research Room for the use of eligible students.

On-line database searches

ASCOT is the Australian Securities Commission database of company and land title records. This service is time-charged and will be restricted to specific projects by arrangement with the lecturer.  Access to other electronic databases is provided through the UTS Library. You can access a range of databases through http://www.lib.uts.edu.au

Press releases

Government press releases and publications are filed under their broad subject area. If you use anything from this collection, please return it to the correct folder or shelf. Do not remove any item from the Journalism Research Room. If you wish to borrow anything overnight, you must see the Production Support Officer.

Telephones

There is a telephone in room 508 which is for UTS journalism coursework use by journalism students ONLY. This telephone is not to be used for personal calls. Calls are monitored: any student found making a personal call on these phones will lose their access privileges to the room and will be required to compensate the Faculty.

To ring a number outside the university, you must dial 'O'; this applies for both local and STD phone calls; there is no international access. The phone number is 9514 1962. If you wish to make a personal call, pay phones are located at the entrance to the Bon Marche building, and on the second floor.

Audio Visual

To keep in touch with the programs broadcast journalists are producing, it is useful to anticipate programs on radio and television and tape them for background information, sources, etc. The Journalism Research Room has a number of facilities for playback and recording purposes:

  • Record - AM/FM radio onto audio cassette
  • Playback - audio cassette and VHS video cassette

If you want to record:

  • VHS to VHS
  • Super VHS to Super VHS
  • U-matic to Super VHS
  • U-matic to VHS
  • or any of these formats to audio cassette, this can be done in viewing suite 334 on the third floor.

Australian Centre for Independent Journalism (ACIJ)

Room 503, Bon Marche
Email: acij@uts.edu.au, WWW: http://acij.uts.edu.au

See the contact details on ACIJ website.

The ACIJ was set up in 1990 as a resource and professional development Centre with a commitment to research into journalistic practice and the fostering of investigative journalism. Its Director is Tony Maniaty. The ACIJ presents short course industry training and publishes Reportage, a publication to which students are invited to submit their work.

It also provides a bridge with the media industry by hosting conferences and seminars and publishing its major research findings and seminar proceedings. In 1998 the Centre began the George Munster Journalism Forums, a series of public seminars which were later broadcast on ABC Radio National.
